Founded at the height of the legendary Colorado goldrush of 1880, Denver Instrument Company is one of the world’s oldest manufacturers of analytical balances. In the late 1880’s, the only analytical balances available in America were manufactured and serviced in Europe.
German immigrant, William Ainsworth, recognized the opportunity for a U.S. manufacturer and entered the market with innovative analytical balance designs. Around 1895, Ainsworth introduced the company’s first short-beam analytical which significantly reduced weighing time and improved reliability. The short-beam design was also one of the first commercial uses for a new alloy known as aluminum.
Today, the Ainsworth tradition of quality and innovation continues at Denver Instrument Company. The company’s vertical orientation to manufacturing ensures total quality control of its finished products as all aspects of design and manufacture are performed in the company’s modern production facilities in Arvada, Colorado.
Denver Instrument’s continued investment in state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and machine tools gives the company’s products a distinct advantage in the world market, without sacrificing the quality of the analytical instrument.

The former Precisa AG was founded in 1935 by Ernst Jost, a first-rate self-made man of the old school. The young company grew into an impressive business with over 1000 employees and the company goal of developing, manufacturing and selling mechanical and then later also electrical and electronic calculating machines. At the start of the 60’s, Precisa AG in Zurich-Oerlikon was taken over by the typewriter manufacturer Hermes S.A. in Yverdon, the group was renamed Hermes Precisa International S.A.
In the face of increasing competition and price pressures of products from the Far East, HPI diversified into other areas. The logical decision was taken to develop and manufacture electronic balances which replaced mechanical balances in the subsequent years. In 1976 electronic precision balances under the Precisa brand were presented for the first time to the ACHEMA in Frankfurt. In 1979, the management had the option of a management buy-out of the electronic balance business area. From 1980 to 1996, the young and motivated team managed to improve the overall turnover, and in particular the balances turnover percentage within the company thanks to an economically sound business sector; the product has held its own and become established against well-known competitors.
For the purposes of long-term succession control, the share capital today is held by three independent industrialists who make the necessary investments in new products and in the further successful expansion of Precisa Instruments AG. Today Precisa Instruments AG is carrying out development and production in its own new building near the motorway junction in Dietikon and is certified in accordance with the ISO9001 standard.
